What is genetic testing?

You may have heard of genetic testing to find out your risk for a suspected genetic condition or the likelihood that you may pass on a genetic disorder to your offspring.

When used in psychotherapy, genetic testing analyzes how your genes may affect your response to certain medications. The Weekend Clinic uses the companies Genesight®, Genomind®, and Tempus® to run the tests.

The tests look for clinically significant differences in your DNA. This lets you know how you may break down or respond to medications. It can let your therapist know if a specific medication will help you or cause unwanted side effects.

What is the benefit of genetic testing?

Genetic testing provides you with highly accurate, personalized medicine and treatment.

Genetic testing takes the “trial and error” out of medication prescriptions for mental health.

Psychiatric medications and dosages are not a “one size fits all” treatment. Instead of having you try different medications to see if they work for you, your therapist can prescribe antidepressants, antianxiety medications, and antipsychotic medications with more precision.

Genetic testing helps your provider determine if you need a higher or lower dose of certain medications.

There’s also less chance that you’ll experience unwanted side effects when you get a medication that is right for you. You can entirely skip the types that are likely to cause adverse reactions.

You’ll get better mental health care while reducing the cost and time wasted on ineffective medications.

How do you conduct genetic testing?

Genetic testing requires a simple cheek swab. Your provider works directly with you as the test can be done in-office or in the comfort of your home. You or your therapist send the swab to a laboratory for analysis. Lab results usually return within a few days. Your therapist then schedules a follow-up appointment to discuss your results.

Genetic testing for mental health reasons can only be ordered by a professional, like those at the Weekend Clinic.
